1. I volunteered at Gowin Parc Dementia and Alzheimer's Residence and Independent Living.
2. This experience reflected what we have learned in class because the people served in this residence are in the disadvantaged group called older adults. They are also disabled because of their illnesses and some are very dependent upon the workers there. The experience also connected with my Administration class I am in right now, because this type of residence could maybe use some type of grant at some point to further help them provide for their older patients.
3. I was able to see how the workers interact with the patients there and how familiar they are with their needs, wants, and personalities. I got to interact with the patients as well and even got to feed one and talk to some others. It was nice to talk to the young workers and hear what education they had gotten and how they ended up working with the group they work with. I gained so much from this experience, including an even more convinced position that working with older adults is for me! I could not stop smiling even when what the older person was saying to me was unclear and I just enjoyed feeding the woman I worked with and then walking around talking to her. I was literally in a state of pure bliss as I sat and talked to the patients and watched the interactions of those around me. I even got some entertainment because the older adults are extremely funny and still have a sense of humor. This was such a wonderful experience and I found myself struggling to leave, which is why Liz and I stayed longer than two hours!
4. This residence is so nice and I imagine it is very helpful to the families of the individuals who live in it. They even were sure to take those who could go and wanted to go to church, and therefore they are an example of how people should be cared for. This residence can help give families peace of mind as they can be assured that their loved ones are in good hands. I even got to see one of the young workers lovingly kiss one of the ladies on her forehead as if she was her very own child. It was very obvious that the job is not always easy, and frustrations do arise, but the job is also very rewarding and the workers there love their patients.
5. As I have stated all throughout this blog, I enjoyed this experience and was overwhelmed by how happy being there made me. I really could not stop smiling and some of the residents smiled at me and spoke to me and I swear it meant the world! I can really see myself working with older adults, functional and non-functional, and giving them the love and attention I know they need and deserve so much! I am still in a state of excitement and am so glad I got to express it in this blog, because I cannot keep it bottled in. I feel the excitement I am feeling right now can only be cured by me going to sleep. I have worn myself out from being so elated!
